AWKA/Nigeria: Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of the Anambra State Governor, has sponsored the enrolment of 1,000 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) into the state’s Health Insurance Scheme to enhance their healthcare access. The announcement was made during a town hall meeting with individuals with special needs, organized to promote her Healthy Living Initiative.
Dr. Soludo emphasized the significant contributions PWDs can make towards a livable and prosperous Anambra state when provided with adequate support. “I invited you because I love you all and look out for you. My husband’s administration also appreciates your undying desire to bring your best to the table of good governance. As I behold your amazing faces, I see strength, tenacity, doggedness, and unbeatable ambitions,” she stated.
“This is why Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative is giving out 1,000 health insurance slots free to PWDs in the state. This is our own way of saying that we care about you and we know that health is the greatest wealth. This free health insurance will be your passport to access the best medical care anywhere in the state. I want you to ensure that you use the health insurance fully to your advantage. When you notice any sign of infirmity, do not waste time visiting your doctor,” she added.
Dr. Soludo urged PWDs to prioritize their health, eat right, and maintain personal and environmental hygiene to stay healthy and alive.
Mr. Ugochukwu Okeke, Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities in Anambra, requested the inclusion of PWDs in the Healthy Living campaign. “PWDs are more affected when it comes to issues of healthy living due to various challenges related to their disabilities. Including PWDs in your campaign will help get the awareness and support down to our members, thereby enabling an inclusive society,” he noted.
Prof. Williams Obiozor, Director of the Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, advocated for increased support and inclusion of PWDs in society. He emphasized that empowering and caring for PWDs is a collective effort and should not be left solely to the government.
Mrs. Ify Obinabo, the state’s Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, expressed her gratitude to Dr. Soludo for her demonstration of love and support for PWDs. Additionally, Mr. Simeon Onyemaechi, Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency, highlighted that the package, costing N12,500 annually, covers medicines and treatments under the scheme.
