ABUJA/Nigeria: Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has expressed strong confidence that the forthcoming National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will be peaceful, democratic, and free of internal conflicts.
Aniagwu gave the assurance on Thursday while speaking on the sidelines of the party’s world press conference at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, ahead of the convention scheduled to hold on Friday at Eagle Square.
The convention, which is expected to attract about 8,453 delegates, will culminate in the emergence of new party leaders through a consensus arrangement, marking a critical phase in the party’s internal democratic process.
Drawing an analogy to illustrate the preparedness of the party, Aniagwu likened the convention to the final stage of baking a cake, noting that the foundation had been meticulously laid from the grassroots level.
“And before you ice the cake, it means that the cake must be baked. We started from the ward level, progressed to the local government, then to the state level, and now to the national convention,” he said.
He maintained that the processes leading to the convention have demonstrated the APC’s commitment to internal democracy, transparency, and strict adherence to its constitution and the provisions of the Electoral Act.
According to him, the largely peaceful conduct of congresses across wards, local governments, states, and geopolitical zones is a clear indication of the party’s capacity to manage its internal affairs without rancour.
Aniagwu acknowledged that disagreements are inevitable in political organisations but emphasized that the APC has established mechanisms to effectively address and resolve disputes whenever they arise.
“You have not heard of any serious trouble from the zonal congresses. Where there are disagreements, the party has mechanisms to resolve them. So, be rest assured that the convention will be rancour-free,” he assured.
He further noted that the successful conduct of the national convention would not only consolidate party unity but also strengthen its democratic credentials and inspire public confidence in its internal processes.
The APC National Convention is expected to set the tone for future political engagements, as the emergence of new leadership will position the party ahead of subsequent electoral cycles.
