By Doris Uboh Media Team

The primary duties of a legislator includes initiating bills and policies concerning the socioeconomic challenges facing the people he is representing in Parliament, bills and policies on the environment, education, Agriculture, trade and commerce, job creation and so on.

It encompasses passing necessary bills that protects the interest of his or her constituency.

A legislator affects people’s everyday life, understanding the fact that he or she was elected by the voters which he or she  represent, purposely to pursue and implement policies which have bearing on their common good.

As a member of the legislative arm or law making organ of government, a legislator work also entails making changes to existing laws and passing new legislation based on his or her constituent’s needs.

He or she often serves on committees that oversee various aspects of the legislature’s oversight functions and government intervention agencies.

Most laws are developed by these committees and agencies and then voted on by the entire legislative body and accented to by the President to become a law of the federation.

By staying on top of important issues or getting correct information on important issues and current events, meeting with constituents, advisers and conducting research. A legislator can make informed decisions that will help him to sponsor bills that can take care of challenges confronting his or her constituency.

Additionally, legislator’s duties also include;

  1. Initiating policies and programmes and ensuring that they are captured in the appropriation bills.
  2. Participation in debates on proposed legislation.
  3. Seeking funding for projects and programmes in his or her constituency.
  4. Lobbying and negotiating with other law makers to gain consensus for the passage of bills and that will benefit his/her constituency.
  5. Making public appearances, presentations and speeches, especially on issues bothering his/her constituency.

Achieving success as a legislator means collaborating with various interest groups; listening to constituent’s concern, debating and compromising with colleagues!
