AWKA/Nigeria: Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has called on the girl child to take engineering profession as a career choice.
President of APWEN, Engr Felicia Agubata made the call during the 35th Anniversary of the Association held at Enugwu-Ukwu in Anambra State.
The Wife of Delta State Deputy Governor, Dr Ebierin Otuaro, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr Nkem Okeke were among dignitaries present at the occasion which attracted icons of the engineering profession.
According to the President of APWEN, the theme of this year Anniversary is “Inspiring the Girl child to take up the sciences with the view of pursuing a career in engineering.”
She pointed out that APWEN was focus at catching them young by creating awareness for the girl child who wish to take engineering as a career as well as being courageous and focus in facing life situation.
Engr Agubata stated that the pupils were drawn from different schools across Anambra State from classes five to six to participate in this year’s event and that the 13 best would be giving scholarship from primary school to the university level.
In a key note address, Engr Ebele Okeke, the first female Civil Engineer stated that APWEN is a non-governmental body that is focus at encouraging women to achieve their professional excellence in engineering.
Engr Okeke, who is also the first female Head of Service in the Federation as well as a US Ambassador on Hand Washing Sanitation, who gave a health talk on hand washing, encouraged the pupils to make it as a practice to always wash their hands thoroughly to avoid contamination.
She highlighted the different branches of engineering profession and urged the pupils to take engineering as a career, adding that engineers are nation builders.
The event feature presentation of awards to icons of engineers in Nigeria and laptops and scholarship to 13 pupils at the primary level to study engineering in the university who had interest in taking up engineering as a career.
