LAGOS/Nigeria: The Commander of the Nigerian Army Education Corps, Yushau Ahmed, has said the corps is making significant contributions to Nigeria’s economic and technological advancement through sustained research, innovation and exhibitions that support military preparedness and national development.
Ahmed made the remarks at the 2025 edition of WASA 2025 held at the Command Children School Sport Ground, where he highlighted the corps’ expanding role in research-driven solutions for operational effectiveness and institutional growth. He noted that the annual event fosters unity and morale among personnel, their families and the civilian community through cultural displays and social interaction.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the tradition of WASA dates back to colonial military customs and features activities such as cultural dances, traditional cuisine exhibitions, masquerade performances and ceremonial bonfires that celebrate diversity within the armed forces.
Ahmed disclosed that both the Nigerian Army College of Environmental Sciences and Technology and the Nigerian Army College of Education participated in the African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit, showcasing innovations ranging from drones and bomb-disposal robots to smart armoury systems and environmental monitoring technologies designed to enhance operational readiness.
He explained that many of the research outputs are currently at prototype stage awaiting funding for testing and certification, adding that the colleges have become focal units for research and development within the Army’s institutional framework.
The commander commended the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, for his support and commitment to strengthening infrastructure and security across command schools nationwide, noting that the improvements would enhance learning environments and sustain high teaching standards through innovative policies.
Ahmed further stated that students of command schools are actively involved in research and innovation programmes as part of deliberate efforts to nurture future innovators early, adding that their participation in exhibitions and national defence events demonstrates the corps’ long-term capacity-building strategy.
He also praised officers serving in formations and private institutions for distinguishing themselves in research and innovation, attributing the corps’ progress to the dedication of personnel and the support of their families.
In his remarks, Special Guest of Honour Kola Ogunkoya, a former corps commander, lauded Ahmed’s leadership, describing it as transformative and instrumental in repositioning the corps as a hub of professionalism and innovation within the Nigerian Army.
Ogunkoya said the WASA celebration provides an opportunity to reflect on collective achievements while reinforcing unity and shared heritage, urging personnel to build on the corps’ accomplishments in 2025 and strive for greater milestones in the coming years.
