YENAGOA/Nigeria: In a concerted effort to invigorate regional transportation networks and catalyze economic activities, the Governors of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross Rivers, Edo, and Delta (BRACED) convened under the auspices of the BRACED Commission. Chaired by Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, the assembly greed on a comprehensive roadmap for regional progress.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Obaseki stressed the imperative of enhanced connectivity across road, rail, water, and air systems.
“We made the following decisions,” he outlined, “highlighting the urgent need to devise improved regional transport connections.”
Key among the resolutions was a resolute call upon the Federal Government to expedite work on the East/West Road, alongside commendation for the initiation of the coastal road from Lagos to Calabar.
The BRACED Governors urged swift completion of these vital infrastructural projects to bolst regional commerce.
In the realm of security, the Council denounced the tragic loss of 17 military officers in Okuama, Delta State, extending heartfelt condolences and urging a high-powered commission of inquiry to prevent future occurrences.
They also appealed for clear delineation of military missions to exclude involvement in civilian disputes and advocated for the return of displaced villagers to their homes.
The Council lauded collaborative efforts between the Bayelsa State government and the United Nations on Drugs and Crime (UNDOC) to establish a peace architecture, underscoring the need for expanded cooperation among member states.
Economic empowerment emerged as a focal point, with the Council applauding strides in financial literacy and skill acquisition, particularly targeting women and youth.Sustained support for small and medium enterprises was directed to fuel regional economic growth.
Despite considerable investments in the power sector, persistent electricity challenges drew attention, prompting a call for closer collaboration between power companies and state governments to actualize the new Electricity Act of 2023. A comprehensive review of power sector reforms, specifically pertaining to transmission, was urged upon the Federal Government.
