LAGOS/Nigeria: Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR has commended the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the entire Nigerian working class for their struggle and commitment to fairness and justice.
CDHR also described NLC as the moral compass of the Nigerian society, adding that the labour movement will be remembered for many years to come for its patriotism and interventions.
President of CDHR, Mr. Malachy Ugwummadu made the statement in his congratulatory message to NLC and workers across Nigeria.
“Today, we celebrate a group of selfless Nigerians who, through their words and actions, continue to demonstrate their love and commitment to Nigeria.
“Some of us who are students of history remember and fully appreciate the roles of your forebears, right from the nation-wide general strike of 1946 through the constitutional conferences, leading to independence in 1960. Today you are still fighting.
“So that we are a free and independent country today is largely due to the struggle of our heroes past in the labour in the labour movement.
“I therefore congratulate you on this special anniversary and urge you to double your efforts and commitment towards our desire of achieving an egalitarian society.
“At this time in our development, Nigerian workers cannot afford to be complacent. In fact, we must align with serious minded-people who yearn for a better society.
“So as you mark this historic occasion, I wish you well. I also wish to use this opportunity to remind Nigerians that our march to nationhood is far from over.
“Therefore we must take advantage of this occasion to work for a society. If Nigeria must join the comity of serious and successful countries, then we must not only respect and recognise our workers, we will also join hands with them. Congratulations once again.
