ASABA/Nigeria: Nigerians had been called to contribute towards better community policing by synergising with the security services to secure the country effectively.
Making the call at the side of the South South Regional Police Security Summit, 2019,held in Asaba, the Deputy Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Christopher Ochor Ochor, asserted that policing had long been left in the hands of the security operatives, which ought not to be.
Rt Hon Ochor said as one time local government chairman, he is much aware that numerous security challenges being faced by Nigerians, especially in the South South zone, are issues that can easily be solved by collective agreement of the people living in an area.
He further stated that there is no society that achieve a security free society, without the people seriously involved in security issues.
The Deputy Speaker while applauding the organisers, said that the suggestions from the summit should be implemented and community policing should be giving a proper legal backing to allow the people at the grassroots in conjunction with the various security services to have a seamless security system.
He called for a close working relationship between the traditional rulers, the police and the individuals at the community level, mostly in intelligent gathering, and the transmission of such information gathered to the appropriate authority.
He applauded the Delta state Governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa for hosting the summit, as such events will help to expose the people to a better way to fight crime, as it comes from different background of expertise attending such events.
