WARRI/Nigeria: Traffic jams in some areas in the twin cities of Warri and Effurun will no longer be experienced by commuters as the Delta State Government has resuscitated the traffic lights in Jakpa Junction and Airport Road by NNPC Link Road Junction in Warri.
Those who spoke to our correspondent in Warri and Effurun about the development expressed joy that the resuscitated traffic lights would bring sanity to driving in the two cities.
Comrade Akpojotor Adjarho who spoke in Warri, commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for his decision to resuscitate the traffic lights, noting that the traffic hold ups popularly known as ‘ go slow’ in Warri and Effurun would be a thing of the past in the said areas.
He however listed some areas that needed the services of traffic lights in Warri and Effurun to include the ever busy Enehen Junction, which he said, was the gate way to Warri and Effurun, Deco Junction Warri and Refinery Road Junction in Effurun.
On his part, a keke (commercial tricycle) rider who simply identified himself as Uncle Joe also commended Governor Okowa for the resuscitation of the traffic lights, observing however that the resuscitated traffic lights would not serve their purpose if disciplined traffic warden and police men were not attached to them to check traffic law breakers like the ones in Asaba.
Uncle Joe also called on the Commissioner for Transport, Mr Vincent Uduaghan, to do something urgently to check the ever present traffic jam in Hausa Quarters along Warri/Sapele Road, Warri which he attributed to the misbehavior of commercial bus drivers and their tricycle rider counterparts whom he accused of breaking traffic laws with impunity in presence of traffic warden and police men.
“Yellow fever (traffic warden) and traffic police men depend on the traffic law breakers for their daily allowances from the illegal extortions they get for breaking traffic laws in Hausa Quarters and Enerhen Junction”, he said.
He appealed to Governor Okowa and the Commissioner of Police, Delta State to check the activities of the corrupt traffic wardens and policemen in order to put an end to the ‘go slow’ in the said areas.
Mrs Regina Oniovosa on her part, also gave a pat on the back on Governor Okowa for the resuscitation of the traffic lights and street lights in some areas in the twin cities of Warri and Effurun.
She appealed to the police authorities to check the nefarious activities of armed bandits who operate in keke, dispossessing unsuspecting passengers of their monies and other valuables on daily bases in broad day light on the roads of Warri and Effurun where there are numerous police check points .
Mrs Oniovosa alleged that the aim of most of the policemen on the check points in Warri and Effurun was to extort monies from commercial vehicle users and cyber criminals popularly known as “yahoo boys” .
Comrade Omoefe Maxwell while commenting on the issue, noted that traffic hold ups on the major roads in Warri and Effurun was caused by the deplorable link or exit roads in areas such as Mowoe, Yoruba, Igbi and Fani Kayode roads in Warri.
He commended the state governor for his laudable achievements on road and drainage infrastructures in the state which he said were second to none since the creation of Delta State.
