AWKA/Nigeria: In a bold initiative to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) in Anambra State is set to host its maiden Tree Planting and Climate Action Summit.
The event, themed “Tree-mendous Strategy for a Sustainable Future,” will take place on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at the Igbariam Campus.
The summit will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions on climate change mitigation strategies and environmental stewardship, the unveiling of the COOU 5-Year Strategic Plan for Tree Planting and Climate Action, the investiture of COOU Climate Action Ambassadors, and a symbolic tree-planting activity by dignitaries, stakeholders, volunteers, and members of the university community.
In a statement from the University Public Relations Officer, Dr. Harrison Madubueze, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha, highlighted the initiative’s dual purpose of beautifying the university campus and contributing to a healthier environment.
“By absorbing carbon dioxide, improving air quality, providing natural shade, promoting the green economy, and advancing climate literacy, this initiative will have a lasting impact,” she stated.
The 5-Year Strategic Plan will be powered by the university’s “One Staff One Tree, One Student One Tree” campaign and collaborative partnerships with external visionaries, ultimately aiming to plant 1,000,000 native trees across the university’s three campuses and various parts of Anambra State.
Acting Vice Chancellor Omenugha extended an invitation to all beneficiaries and benefactors of the Earth to join this pivotal event and become part of the solution for a greener and more prosperous tomorrow.
“Remember, the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago; the next best time is now,” she emphasized.”
“By planting trees and engaging in meaningful dialogue, we can collectively create a lasting positive impact on our environment.”
