ASABA/Nigeria: The Senior Political Adviser to the Delta State Government, Chief Festus Ochonogor has advanced the reasons why the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, recorded massive votes across the state in the just concluded Local Government Elections.
Speaking to Journalists in his office at government house Asaba, Chief Ochonogor attributed the massive votes recorded by the PDP across the state to the leadership structure of the party built over the years.
He noted that over the years the leadership of the party starting from the former Governors of the state, Chief James Ibori, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan and now Governor Okowa have built bridges across the length and breadth of the state which made it possible for the dominance of the party at the grassroots.
“Governor Okowa being a senator knows the rules and laws particularly as regards to local government administration that is why he made it clear when he came on board as a governor that he will not subscribe to the idea of Caretaker Committee. He believed in the community approach to governance, that is why he constituted the DSIEC, on time and provided the enabling environment for them to do a thorough job. The electoral body being alive to it duties provided the timetable for the election and it was followed religiously by all stakeholders.”
Continuing; “PDP carried out massive campaign across the state, coupled with the infrastructural strides of the state government and at a time it was obvious that we will record massive votes hence the opposition parties particularly, the All Progressive Congress APC results to blackmail and threats.”
He said the main opposition party, the APC was not prepared for the election because according to him, they never campaigned and were only trying to create impression that they were on ground.
Ochonogor maintained that as far as Delta State is concerned, the ruling PDP has built the cohesion which will take time to brake, stressing that nevertheless the PDP in the state will analysed the outcome of the election with a view at strengthening the party ahead of the 2019 general elections.
The Senior Political Adviser however, promised that with the level of peaceful coexistence in the state which has further improve the revenue profile of the state government, the year 2018 will be a better year in terms of the empowerment and prosperity of Deltans, which the elected officials at the council level will help to implement at the grassroots.
