DUBAI/United Arab Emirate: During a session titled ‘Knowledge in Knowledge out Bearers for local community Climate action’ at the Ecuador Pavilion in COP28, Dubai, representatives from various Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) highlighted the pivotal role of clean energy transition parks.
Prince Israel Orekha, the Executive Director of Connected Advocacy for Empowerment and Youth Development, spoke on behalf of the CSOs, emphasizing the multifaceted advantages of these initiatives beyond their environmental impact.
Orekha stressed that involving local talent in clean energy transition parks would not only encourage innovation but also instill a sense of ownership, ensuring sustained and profound impacts on communities. He underlined the essentiality of these parks in securing a sustainable future for local communities and addressing pressing environmental challenges.
Pointing out the perils of relying on traditional energy sources, Orekha highlighted the grave environmental and health risks associated with such practices. “Pollution from traditional energy harms our environment and health,” he stated, citing respiratory issues and long-term healthcare burdens as just some of the health hazards stemming from conventional energy use.
Enumerating the benefits of clean energy parks, Orekha outlined their potential to enhance energy security, reduce vulnerability to price fluctuations, create jobs, and fortify communities against the adverse impacts of climate change. He emphasized the need for community engagement, stressing that this transition should align with local needs and foster knowledge about sustainable practices.
Furthermore, Orekha cautioned against false solutions, warning that they could perpetuate environmental injustice and disproportionately affect marginalized communities. He advocated for transparent decision-making processes, urging thorough research and community input for sustainable solutions.
In advocating for policy changes, Orekha proposed active participation in community discussions on clean energy, lobbying for inclusive policies addressing environmental and social aspects, and consistent support for clean energy initiatives at local and national levels. He underscored sustained advocacy efforts as crucial for effective change, both locally and nationwide.
