DANGOTE VS NUPENG: Can Nigeria And Nigerians Survive?

Dangote Refinery

By Hon. Ann Izi, Ph.D.

As we navigate the complexities of Dangote’s business practices and their impact on the market, it’s essential to examine the broader implications. The disputes between NUPENG and Dangote Company raise concerns about monopolistic tendencies and the need for fair competition in our country.

Dangote’s cement distribution pattern is a case in point. Despite introducing his own trucks to deliver cement, prices skyrocketed from ₦4,500 to ₦12,000 per bag. Similarly, the refinery’s promise of cheaper petrol has been short-lived, with prices fluctuating wildly.

When Dangote Refinery launched, the initial price of petrol was around ₦898 per liter. Some filling stations later sold petrol at reduced prices:

– *MRS Stations*:

– Lagos: ₦860 per liter

– South-West: ₦870 per liter

– North: ₦880 per liter

– Abuja: ₦875 per liter

– South-South and South-East: ₦890 per liter

– *Heyden Petroleum Stations*:

– Lagos: ₦865 per liter

– South-West: ₦875 per liter

– North: ₦885 per liter

– South-South and South-East: ₦895 per liter

– *Ardova Petroleum Stations*:

– Lagos: ₦865 per liter

– South-West: ₦875 per liter

– North: ₦885 per liter

– South-South and South-East: ₦895 per liter

However, Dangote recently adjusted its ex-depot price from ₦898 to ₦970 per liter, citing global crude oil price increases. This move has sparked concerns about the company’s commitment to reducing prices.

The introduction of CNG trucks aims to:

– *Reduce Emissions*: Minimize environmental impact

– *Increase Efficiency*: Improve fuel distribution efficiency and reduce costs

– *Create Jobs*: Expected to create over 15,000 direct jobs

But will this initiative lead to reduced petrol prices? Given Dangote’s track record, it’s uncertain.

In conclusion, I urge Dangote Refinery to allow its drivers to associate with labour unions, as prescribed by law. This would help regulate driver behavior, eradicate underaged truck drivers on highways, reduce accidents, and promote road safety. Membership in NUPENG would ensure that drivers are monitored and held to high standards, ultimately reducing the loss of lives and properties on Nigerian roads.
