Defection of 27 Lawmakers Signals Dire Times for Wike’s Political Fortunes – Eze

PORT HARCOURT/Nigeria: In a scathing commentary on the recent political maneuvers in Rivers State, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, erstwhile National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New People’s Democratic Party (nPDP), has drawn attention to the seismic shift caused by the defection of 27 lawmakers loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

According to Eze, this mass defection is a clear indicator that the former governor is hurtling toward political obsolescence.

Describing the lawmakers as being subservient and likening them to “pieces of furniture” within the state legislature, Eze accused them of unquestioningly following Wike’s directives, regardless of the interests of their constituents. He highlighted that their allegiance might ultimately lead to their dismissal under Section 109 of the constitution.

Calls from various quarters, including legal experts and civil society groups, have surfaced, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct elections to fill the void left by the departed lawmakers. Eze firmly asserted that upon such elections, none of the 27 defectors would return to the State Assembly.

Eze took a swipe at Wike’s earlier characterization of the APC as suffering from “stage four cancer,” now ironically labeling the newly defected lawmakers as part of the “cancerous political party.” Expressing dismay at Wike’s influential standing despite predicting the APC’s downfall, Eze vowed not to stand idly by as Wike and his allies attempt to dismantle the party.

Amidst the upheaval, Eze urged the National Assembly to intervene urgently and assume the functions of the State Legislature to prevent economic paralysis and hindered progress in the state, particularly as Governor Wike needs to present the 2024 budget.

The political commentator further warned Governor Fubara against maintaining a passive stance in the face of ongoing challenges. Eze emphasized the need for proactive measures, urging Fubara to confront Wike head-on and dismantle his influence in Rivers State.

Additionally, Eze advocated for the dissolution of the Local Government Councils and the state Executive Council for the greater good of the state, suggesting that it would enable the Governor to reappoint individuals aligned with his vision.

In closing, Eze emphasized the critical juncture facing Governor Fubara, cautioning that missing the opportunity to act decisively could result in irreversible consequences, ultimately holding the governor accountable for any missed opportunities to steer the state in a more favorable direction.
