Delta Approves 25% Reduction in Acceptance Fees as Palliative for Students

The governor’s decision was made public through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, on Wednesday in Asaba.

The statement outlined that the 25 percent reduction in acceptance fees is part of the Delta State Government’s comprehensive measures to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on its citizens.

Ahon further clarified that this reduction applies exclusively to new students enrolling at the state-owned universities, namely Delta State University, Abraka; Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro; University of Delta, Agbor; and the Dennis Osadebay University, Anwai-Asaba.

Governor Oborevwori has been proactive in addressing the economic challenges posed by the fuel subsidy removal. Prior to this announcement, he had already approved a three-month payment of N10,000 to workers and disbursed N5.522 billion to 50,196 workers as promotion arrears, offering relief to civil servants across the state.

To ensure the continuity of essential services, the governor introduced a three-day rotational scheme for civil servants on Salary Grade levels 1-14, with staff on SGL 15 and above granted flexibility in their respective MDAs.

Furthermore, the state government is actively recruiting 2,000 primary school teaching and non-teaching staff in 22 out of the 25 Local Government Areas, demonstrating its commitment to the welfare of its citizens.

In a bid to provide additional support to the less privileged, the poor, persons with disabilities, and the elderly in the society, Governor Oborevwori’s administration has earmarked N10 billion in addition to over 17,000 bags of rice and over 64,000 bags of maize, all in 50kg quantities, as part of its palliative efforts.

These multifaceted initiatives underscore the governor’s determination to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the people of Delta State.
