ASABA/Nigeria: Members of the Delta State House of Assembly on Tuesday commenced a six-week annual recess, temporarily suspending plenary sittings to allow legislators undertake constituency engagements, participate in capacity-building programmes and attend to other official responsibilities.
The decision followed the unanimous adoption of a motion moved by the House Leader, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, and seconded by Hon. Pereotu Oloye, representing Burutu II Constituency, during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor.
Addressing lawmakers before the adjournment, Guwor described the recess as an opportunity for members to strengthen their legislative skills while maintaining close contact with the people they represent.
He urged legislators to use the break to participate in scheduled training programmes aimed at enhancing their effectiveness and to return to their constituencies to engage residents on government policies, identify pressing community needs and channel such concerns to the Assembly for legislative action.
According to the Speaker, continuous learning remains essential to effective lawmaking, encouraging members to take full advantage of the training opportunities available during the recess.
Guwor also acknowledged the contributions of the management and staff of the Assembly, saying their support has continued to facilitate the smooth conduct of legislative business.
He commended journalists covering the legislature for consistently reporting the activities of the House, including plenary sessions, committee work and oversight functions, urging the media to sustain objective and responsible coverage that keeps the public informed.
The Speaker also expressed appreciation to other stakeholders whose contributions, he said, have supported the passage of bills, motions and other legislative activities aimed at promoting good governance in the state.
He wished lawmakers and staff safe travels during the recess and expressed optimism that the House would reconvene with renewed energy for the next phase of its legislative agenda.
The Delta State House of Assembly is scheduled to resume plenary on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
