OGHARA/Nigeria: The Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Education has initiated a series of visits to establishments under its legislative oversight to assess the level of commitment to quality service delivery. The committee, led by Chairman Hon. Charles Chukwuemeka Emetulu, aims to ensure that government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) align with the state government’s MORE mantra, emphasizing Merit, Orderliness, Responsibility, and Efficiency.
The committee, representing the 8th Delta State Assembly under the leadership of Speaker Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor, is determined to drive excellent performance in all MDAs. Hon. Emetulu, who represents Ndokwa West in the House, highlighted that oversight duties are a constitutional responsibility empowering legislative committees to oversee financial appropriations and implementation levels within MDAs.
Focusing on the state’s education sector, the Committee on Education has resolved to enhance standards. Hon. Emetulu, accompanied by Vice Chairman Hon. Benson Obire and other members, visited Delta State Polytechnic Otefe-Oghara, College of Education Mosogar, and College of Education Warri. The lawmakers praised the removal of bureaucratic bottlenecks to promote institutional independence, emphasizing the need for innovative funding approaches beyond government reliance.
Expressing satisfaction with the institutions, particularly in project execution and meeting TETfund requirements, Hon. Emetulu assured legislative support for initiatives such as dual-mode programs to address declining student populations. He encouraged staff to upgrade their skills to meet modern demands and pledged to collaborate with other committees to improve internal infrastructure.
At Delta State Polytechnic Otefe-Oghara, the committee promised support for completing abandoned projects and commended ongoing construction. Similarly, at College of Education Mosogar, they praised perimeter fencing and new projects. At College of Education Warri, the committee pledged to engage Desopadec to resume an administrative building project.
Commissioner for Higher Education Prof. Johnbull Tonukeri praised the lawmakers’ oversight and support, noting ministry efforts in course accreditation and staff shortage mitigation. Rectors of the institutions appealed for assistance in completing projects and accreditation funding, also urging the adoption of dual-mode programs for NCE certificates and degrees.
The oversight visits underscore the committee’s commitment to enhancing educational service delivery in Delta State, ensuring accountability, and promoting educational excellence.
