ASABA/Nigeria: The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to enacting impactful laws that will foster peace, development, and good governance across the state.
Speaking at the House’s resumption of plenary for 2025 following the festive holidays, the Speaker highlighted the crucial partnership between the legislative and executive arms of government as essential for mobilizing resources and ensuring the welfare and security of Delta’s residents.
Rt. Hon. Guwor commended the Assembly for concluding the 2024 legislative session on a high note with the timely passage of the 2025 Appropriation Bill, now signed into law by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. The Speaker also noted the passage and assent of five other critical bills that align with the administration’s MORE Agenda, aimed at state development and the welfare of citizens.
“These laws include the University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, Establishment (Amendment) Law, Delta State Structures for Signage and Advertisement Agency (Amendment) Law, Delta State Human Trafficking (Prohibition) Law, Special Offences Court (Amendment) Law, and the Delta State Protection of Persons with Disability Law,” he revealed.
He praised the Governor’s proactive approach to governance, particularly through on-site inspections of state projects, and emphasized the legislature’s role in ensuring that public expenditures reflect value for money.
The Speaker charged House members to intensify efforts on pending bills, urging committee chairmen and members to expedite legislative processes before the end of the second session in June. “Together, we must work for the progress of Delta State,” he stated.
While acknowledging the stability and unity enjoyed in the 8th Assembly, Guwor appealed for continued collaboration among lawmakers, staff, and the media to sustain the Assembly’s productivity and effectiveness.
On a somber note, the Speaker extended condolences to the families affected by the January 5 tanker explosion in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, which resulted in the tragic loss of lives and properties. A minute of silence was observed in honor of the victims.
“We pray for God to grant the affected families the fortitude to bear this loss and bring comfort to their homes,” Guwor said.
Hon. Festus Okoh, Deputy Majority Leader and representative of Ika South Constituency, thanked the House for its solidarity and called on the state government to equip the fire service for improved emergency response.
The session underscored the Delta State Assembly’s renewed commitment to legislative excellence in 2025, with a focus on fostering development, ensuring accountability, and addressing the pressing needs of the people.
