Delta Assembly Speaker Reaffirms Synergy with Executive, Commends Governor for Minimum Wage Approval

ASABA/Nigeria: The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, has emphasized the strong partnership between the legislature and the executive in fostering a harmonious relationship between labor and the government.

Speaking at the resumption of plenary on Tuesday after the lawmakers’ recess, Guwor urged his colleagues to focus on their core duties of lawmaking, representation, and oversight to benefit their constituents. He commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his leadership, particularly for approving the new minimum wage and establishing a committee to work out the necessary adjustments for its implementation.

Addressing the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) in the House, Guwor assured them that the issue of CONLESS is receiving positive attention and called for their understanding and cooperation.

“As we begin plenary today, more than ever before, we will continue to support the Executive through legislative measures and interventions in line with the 8th Assembly Legislative Agenda,” Guwor stated. “We will also ensure the synergy needed to fully realize the M.O.R.E Agenda for the benefit of Deltans.”

Welcoming the lawmakers back, Guwor expressed his joy at seeing them return and highlighted the importance of their time away. “I believe this past six weeks outside this hallowed chamber has been eventful as well as refreshing,” he said. “It provided us with ample opportunity to engage with our constituents and other critical stakeholders. It also afforded us valuable room for assessment and review of our legislative duties and engagements thus far.”

Guwor encouraged the lawmakers to work diligently to close any identified gaps and improve on their successes, ensuring they consolidate on their core duties for the overall good of their constituents. “This will be intentional and forward-looking,” he added.

The Speaker praised Governor Oborevwori for steering the state’s governance in the right direction and commended the State Executive Council for approving the new minimum wage and setting up a committee for its implementation.

Reflecting on the lawmakers’ recent participation in a Leadership Development Programme, Guwor noted that it had further equipped them to deliver on their mandate. “I look forward to a more robust, incisive, and clinical approach to issues in plenary and committee assignments,” he said.

He reiterated the legislature’s role as a critical arm of government, working alongside the executive and judiciary to ensure the welfare and security of the people. “On behalf of the Legislature, I wish to profoundly thank and specially commend His Excellency, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, for his outstanding capacity and leadership in addressing state issues that emerged during our recess. We will continue to provide legislative support for His Excellency in pursuit of the M.O.R.E Agenda,” Guwor affirmed.

The Speaker highlighted recent approvals by the State Executive Council, facilitated by the House’s appropriation, including several road projects that will impact 23 out of the 25 Local Government Areas of the State. He also mentioned the government’s approval of two Computerized Tomography (CT) Scanning Machines for Warri Central Hospital and Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara, as well as the renovation of 150 primary health centers across the state.

In closing, Guwor thanked the Principal Officers and Members of the House for their cooperation and unwavering support. “By deed and action, you have proven that we are one family knitted together for the common good of our constituents. I do not take for granted your love and prayers for me. Always remember, UNITY IS MAJORITY,” he said.

He reminded the Standing Committees of the House to expedite the submission of bills for consideration by the Committee of the Whole House as the end of the year approaches.
