ASABA/Nigeria: The Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Delta State Council, is now to be completed and commissioned before May 29, 2021.
Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, gave the assurance when the EXCO and some members of the NUJ paid him Courtesy visit in him office.
Aniagwu stated that the delay in completion of the project was as a result of the furnishing aspect of the secretariat, saying that arrangement had been completed.
“By the grace of God, the building will be completed and Commissioned before May 29 2020 and once the Press Centre is completed it means the big masquerade has been pulled out from the way,” he added.
Speaking on the challenges being faced by staff of DBS Warri and Asaba and The Pointer Newspapers, he stated that funds had been approved to address those challenges but still following the due process before it would be released.
On checkup dues, the commissioner stressed the need for members of the union to always pay their dues as and at when due, advising that it would help to avoid crisis during election.
He frowned at the practice where members would wait for election period before clearing their dues, saying that other professional bodies would not condone such.
The commissioner advised the Ikeogwu led executive to bring every member of the council on board without minding whether they supported him during the election or not, saying such disposition would help him have a successful tenure.
Aniagwu lauded the exco for the initiative of forming a corporative society, saying that it would enable members to survive in times of hardship.
Earlier, the Chairman of NUJ, Delta State Council, Comrade Mike Ikeogwu thanked the commissioner for their role he played during the state council election.
Comrade Ikeogwu stated that the housing commissioner had been taken to the council’s secretariat to take the cost implication as instructed, even as he crave the indulgence of Mr Aniagwu to help the union fecilitate the process to ensure the building was completed before as promised.
“We want to have an independent NUJ in the state to enable us not to run to governor for assistant always and this will be achieved when we establish our corporative society,” he said.
