Delta Commissioner Urges Vigilance from Chief Inspectors and Principals to Uphold Educational Standards

ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, has called upon Chief Inspectors of Education (CIEs) in the state to maintain ongoing engagement with school principals within their respective jurisdictions.

Mrs. Ezewu made this call during a meeting with Chief Inspectors of Education and secondary school principals in Oshimili South Local Government Area. She underscored the purpose of the meeting as reiterating the commitment of Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration to enhance the quality of education in the state.

The commissioner emphasized that the Ministry, in its pursuit of making education in Delta State a model for other states, expects all its departments and affiliates to strictly adhere to measures aimed at eliminating unprofessional behaviors that could tarnish the state’s image.

Mrs. Ezewu stressed the need for school principals to instill positive values in students. She further affirmed the state government’s readiness to take punitive action against individuals engaged in activities contrary to the Ministry’s directives.

Additionally, the commissioner revealed that a recent fact-finding mission by the Ministry sought to understand why some children resorted to selling sachet water in marketplaces during school days. The investigation revealed that these children were predominantly from families unable to afford high school fees.

Mrs. Ezewu assured the public that Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori’s government is committed to the welfare of Deltans and has no intention of raising school fees during these economically challenging times. She warned school principals against extorting parents already burdened by economic difficulties.

The commissioner reiterated that the ongoing inspections by the Ministry are not a witch-hunt but rather a means to uncover illegal levies imposed on parents. She vowed that her tenure would employ all necessary disciplinary measures to hold accountable those involved in extortion. Failure to cooperate with the Ministry in ensuring access to secondary education for all Deltans will result in reprimands.

In a stern warning, the honorable commissioner announced the formation of an education monitoring team within the Ministry to closely oversee the activities of school principals and curb any undesirable developments.
