ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen, has affirmed the state government’s unwavering commitment to advancing fiscal responsibility policies aimed at fostering growth and development within the region.
Ekedayen stated this in a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba. He emphasised that the Ministry of Economic Planning, responsible for charting the state’s economic course, is steadfast in delivering on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s ambitious development agenda.
He revealed the government’s determination to vigorously pursue infrastructural development initiatives across all senatorial districts of the state.
“We are fully prepared to prioritize the enhancement of both the education and healthcare sectors,” Ekedayen declared, stressing the anticipation of significant improvements in both the quality and quantity of infrastructure projects throughout the state. He underscored the interdependence of infrastructure development and human capital growth, asserting, “You cannot embark on substantial infrastructural development without the necessary support from human capital development. This is why strengthening the education and healthcare sectors is imperative.”
Ekedayen reassured the people of Delta State of the government’s unwavering commitment to poverty reduction, emphasizing that a healthy populace is essential for realizing the administration’s vision and advancing the state’s prosperity. He encouraged residents to seek alternative productive means of livelihood, particularly in the face of the current challenging economic circumstances.
“People should explore innovative ways to engage in productive activities,” he advised. The commissioner emphasized the critical importance of agriculture in driving improved production and ensuring food security, highlighting the state’s favourable climate and fertile land. However, he expressed concern over the abandonment of agriculture, once a cornerstone of the state’s economy, in favour of perceived white-collar jobs and alternative livelihoods.
“We have neglected agriculture, which used to be the backbone of our state’s economy, in pursuit of seemingly more attractive occupations,” Ekedayen lamented. His remarks underscored the state government’s commitment to revitalizing agriculture and achieving comprehensive development for Delta State. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
