ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reinforced his administration’s commitment to security by donating 31 operational vehicles to the Police and other security agencies in the state. The vehicles, handed over on Monday in Asaba to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, are set to enhance joint security efforts under the newly rebranded “Operation Delta Sweep.”
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Governor Oborevwori stated that the initiative reflects his administration’s dedication to maintaining peace and security in the state. He explained that the rebranding of the security task force, formerly known as “Delta Hawk,” signals a renewed strategy to combat insecurity and foster a safe environment for development.
“In my MORE Agenda, I promised Deltans enhanced peace and security,” the Governor said. “This rebranding underscores our focus on reducing crime and ensuring a secure environment where investors feel confident. Without security, meaningful development cannot occur. This initiative aims to improve the quality of life for our citizens and promote harmony across the state.”
The Governor highlighted the significant achievements of the security task force since its establishment in December 2020, including successes in curbing illegal oil bunkering, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and drug-related crimes. He revealed that the state government has now provided a total of 66 vehicles, including 31 new additions comprising 23 pickups, eight Sienna wagons, and four Hilux vehicles previously delivered, to bolster daily patrols, especially during the Ember Months.
Governor Oborevwori also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for its “Safe School Program,” which protects educational institutions from terror attacks. He praised the efforts of Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, and other security chiefs for their commitment to safeguarding the state.
“I am confident that under their capable leadership, Delta State is becoming increasingly secure,” the Governor said. “Their unity and cooperation have been commendable.”
Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, in his response, lauded Governor Oborevwori’s unwavering support for security operations in the state. He described the donation of 31 vehicles as a testament to the Governor’s dedication to the safety of Delta State residents.
“Your Excellency, your commitment to the safety of your people is truly inspiring,” the IGP said. “These vehicles will be immediately deployed to enhance the operational effectiveness of Operation Delta Sweep. With a leader like you, we are confident in achieving our security goals.”
The Governor also attended the opening ceremony of the Police Public Relations Officers/Police Communication Experts Conference in Asaba, where he emphasised the importance of effective communication in countering misinformation about Delta State. He urged police officers to strengthen public engagement and transparency, noting that collaboration between the police and the public is essential for fostering trust.
Declaring the conference open, the IGP reaffirmed the Police Force’s commitment to fairness, accountability, and fostering amicable resolutions. He acknowledged the media’s vital role in shaping public perception and called for strengthened cooperation in advancing transparency and advocacy.
The donation and the rebranding of the security initiative reflect Governor Oborevwori’s proactive approach to addressing insecurity and his vision for a safer and more prosperous Delta State.
