ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Ministry of Environment has embarked on evacuation of waste from illegal dumpsites in the state.
Addressing journalists during the clean up exercise and inspection to some illegal dumpsites in Asaba, the Director of Sanitation, Mr Lucky Adah, said that the indiscriminate refuse dumps in Asaba was defacing the state capital, which he noted, ought not to be.
He said that the ministry had evacuated debris illegally dumped around the former Civil Service Commission office in Asaba, and charged resident to take ownership of the environment, as well as desist from acts of dumping refuse indiscriminately.
The director advised that they acquire refuse bin so as to properly dispose their waste through private sector participants (PSPs) to government approved dump sites, adding that sensitization on cleanliness of the environment was a regular exercise carried out by the ministry.
Expressing delight, one of the residents of the community, Mrs Kate Chijioke, said that the building, which turned out to be an illegal dumpsite shortly after the occupants left the building, was an environmental hazard and health threat.
She commended the state government for the intervention of evacuating the illegal dumpsite, advising that Deltans should imbibe the culture of cleanliness.
