ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa has been commended for his initiative in establishing the committee on human rights violation as well as providing an enabling environment for the effective operations of the committee.
The immediate past Chairman of Nigeria Bar Association, Warri, Dr. Jonathan Ekperusi gave the commendation in Asaba while speaking on DBS Television programmme tagged: Justice Half which was monitored in Asaba.
Dr. Ekperusi who said that the committee since inception had addressed a huge number of complaints ranging from human rights violation by the Law Enforcement Agencies especially the Police during the End Sars protest, disclosed that it was inaugurated by Senator Ifeanyi Okowa on October 20, 2021.
He recalled that after the End Sars protest, the Federal Government through the office of the Vice President Yemi Osibanjo, requested the State Governments to set up panels of enquiry.
He stated that the panel which was set up by the Governor on the issue of human rights violation had long submitted its report, noting that the report had been acted upon.
The former NBA Chairman said that the Governor was proactive in ensuring that there was no such protest to be witnessed in future, adding that the committee had received complaints from the 25 Local Government Areas of the state.
Dr. Ekperusi stated that the committee engaged the Police and other Law Enforcement Agencies in ensuring that they abide by the rules of their engagement especially in discharging their duties.
He noted that the committee received complaints through Obudsman in Asaba and Warri, saying that formal complaints were accompanied by an affidavit of facts.
The Legal luminary advised the public to be well guided when sending their complaints to the body against perjury which equally carries its own penalty if anyone falsely accused any law enforcement agent
The other discussant, Mr. Francis Itua Esq, also made some useful contributions regarding the achievements of the committee.
