ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has announced plans to rebuild the school and health center in Okuama, Ughelli South, following a devastating crisis that left the community in ruins. The violence erupted after the killing of four military officers and 13 soldiers, leading to significant destruction and displacement.
During the meeting with Okuama stakeholders and members of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp Management Committee at Government House in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori emphasized his administration’s commitment to restoring the community in partnership with other stakeholders.
He urged displaced residents to relocate to the IDP camp at Ewu for proper profiling and access to essential services, including healthcare.
“No effort will be spared in championing peace and development in Okuama,” Governor Oborevwori stated. “We must uphold the ideals that will positively impact our ancestral homes.”
Pastor Edewor Egedegbe, Secretary General of Ewu Kingdom, expressed gratitude to the governor for his support and fatherly approach. “The Governor spoke to us as a father, sharing in our pain and demonstrating a firm commitment to rebuilding Okuama,” he said.
“He assured us that the reconstruction of the health center and school would be completed within three to four months.”
Egedegbe highlighted the governor’s decision to include two Okuama indigenes in the IDP committee, ensuring accurate identification of those affected by the crisis. “This inclusion reassures our people that their needs will be properly addressed,” he added.
Mr. Abraham Ogbodo, Chairman of the IDP Management Committee, praised the meeting’s outcomes and called on displaced residents to move to the camp, which can accommodate up to 1,700 people. “The state government has finalized plans for the new health center and school in Okuama. We are fully prepared to receive and support all affected individuals,” he said.
