ASABA/Nigeria: The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori paid a visit to the victims of a tragic accident involving the Bayelsa State Football Supporters Club, who were on their way to Asaba for the Nigerian Women Football League final between Delta Queens and Bayelsa Queens when one of the buses in their convoy was involved in a fatal crash after Kwale, which resulted to the death of four members of the supporters club while seven others sustained injuries.
Upon his arrival at the Asaba Specialist Hospital, Governor Oborevwori was received by Dr. Peace Ighosewe, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Mr. Daniel Igali, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, Dr. Kingsley Emu, the Secretary to the State Government, and Hon. Johnson Erijo, the Chief of Staff to the Governor. Dr. Ighosewe guided the Governor through the male and female surgical wards, explaining how the emergency situation had been handled.
After the ward visitation, Governor Oborevwori spoke to journalists, expressing his condolences to the victims and commending the hospital for effectively managing their cases. He reported that at the time of his visit, four individuals had unfortunately lost their lives, while the seven injured victims were responding well to treatment and in stable condition. He expressed hope for their survival, attributing it to their strong will and the proactive efforts of the hospital’s CMD and her team.
Governor Oborevwori shared that upon receiving the call from the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, they immediately dispatched an ambulance to rescue the victims and transport them to Asaba. He praised the doctors for their preparedness in receiving the victims and acknowledged their exceptional work in maintaining stable conditions for the patients. The Governor emphasized that the Asaba Specialist Hospital is well-equipped and staffed with competent professionals capable of handling any medical situation.
The Governor expressed a mix of emotions, as the State was meant to celebrate the victory of Delta Queens in the Nigerian Women Football League Final against Bayelsa but was saddened by the tragic incident. He stated that it would be inappropriate to celebrate when four lives were lost, and seven others injured.
Governor Oborevwori extended his condolences to Governor Douye Diri and the people of Bayelsa State, emphasizing the pain felt by the Delta State Government over the loss of the four individuals. He prayed for the departed souls to find eternal rest.
During his visit, the Governor also approved the purchase of artificial legs for a diabetic patient who had undergone amputation at the hospital. The approval came after the patient requested assistance from the Governor to acquire artificial legs, enabling her to walk again.
