OWA-OYIBU/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has launched an official investigation into allegations of land grabbing leveled against the traditional ruler of Owa Kingdom, Obi Dr. Emmanuel Efeizomor, in Ika North-East Local Government Area, in a bid to forestall a looming crisis in the community.
The probe followed growing tension and a planned state-wide protest by a group of aggrieved indigenes led by the Owa-Oyibu Development Initiative. The group had accused the monarch of forcefully dispossessing landowners, mostly widows, of their ancestral lands under alleged false pretenses.
Leading the investigative process, Chief Edwin Uzor, Special Adviser to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, met with the affected persons and urged them to remain calm while the government delves into the matter.
“We have received enough evidence from you that will aid our investigation. We commend your peaceful conduct and assure you that the administration of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori is committed to justice and equity. No Deltan, regardless of financial or social status, will be victimized,” Uzor said.
He further appealed to the youth in the kingdom to maintain peace and avoid any actions that could escalate the situation, while promising a swift and thorough investigation that would lead to a peaceful resolution.
Over 100 indigenes of Owa Kingdom turned up to present testimonies, mostly from women and widows claiming their lands had been seized unjustly. Their accounts were recorded as part of the fact-finding effort.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Chairman of the Owa-Oyibu Development Initiative, Hon. Benson Nkeki, confirmed that the dialogue was triggered by their earlier protest against the monarch’s alleged high-handedness.
“We were preparing for a statewide protest before we were prevailed upon by the State Assembly leadership. We are peaceful people but determined. We will give the government the benefit of the doubt. If justice is not served, we’ll take our protest to the National Assembly and beyond,” Nkeki warned.
He insisted that the group remains resolute in its demand for justice and restitution of lands taken from rightful owners in Owa Kingdom.
The unfolding investigation has brought temporary calm to the community, but observers say the situation remains tense pending the outcome of the government’s inquiry.
