Asaba: The Delta State Government has said that violators of the Consumer Protection Council Act should be ready to face the consequences of their nefarious activities.
This note of warning was sounded on Tuesday (14/03/2017) by the Chairman of the Delta State Consumer Protection Committee, who is also the state Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Barr. Mrs. Mary Iyasere, when the committee visited some organizations in Warri in continuation of its advocacy visits.
Represented by the Secretary of the committee, Mr. Felix Oseji, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry revealed that any violator of the Consumer Protection Council Act 2014 shall be liable on conviction to a fine of N50,000 or five years imprisonment or both.
She stated that no government worth its salt would sit aloof and leave consumers in its domain to the whims and caprices of manufacturers and service providers.
Barr. Iyasere said that the committee is poised to ensure that goods that are in the market are fit for the purpose for which they are sold.
At the Warri Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force, the Commander, ACP Muhammad M. Shaba, stated that adequate public enlightenment on the mandate of the committee is imperative since members of the public are end users of products.
He assured that officers and men under his command will be available to accompany members of the committee when enforcement of the law begins.
Members of the committee also visited the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in Warri and were received by the Zonal Operations Controller, Mr. Olugbenga Koku.
