ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Ministry of Information has pledged its support in the fight against the spread of malaria.
The state Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu gave the pledge when he received, a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Health, who paid him an advocacy visit.
The commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Paul Osahor, said that malaria was a pandemic which must be treated with utmost care to prevent its spread, saying that its consequences were unbearable.
The commissioner emphasized that Delta State Government had placed the health of Deltans as priority through its free medical care given to pregnant women and children between 0-5 years.
The commissioner promised the ministry of health of support by ensuring that all its jingles are aired free of charge in all the state-owned media.
Speaking on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs Joy Okuremo told the commissioner that their aim of the visit was to engage Delta Ministry of Information in the spread of the awareness on the use of mosquitoes treated net.
According to the ministry of health, nine persons die every 24 hours while many are hospitalized on daily basis.
The ministry representative said that malaria was caused by bites from female anopheles’ mosquito which usually breed in stagnant water.
As a preventive measure, she advised that everyone should be encouraged to sleep under treated net, early antenatal care should be encouraged for pregnant women, and people should eat well and do regular exercise.
She harped on the need for the message to be taken to every family and loved ones to ensure zero percent malaria cases in the state.
