Ebedei: Nigerians have been advised to go for regular medical check up to know their health statues in order to stop the growth of sicknesses such as breast cancer, as a call to end the cultural practice of female circumcision or Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has been advocated..
The advice was given by the Executive Vice Chairman of Ukwuani Local Government, Delta State, Dr. Kingsley Ojie on Saturday, 4 March, 2017 during a public awareness campaign by the Nwa Ada Ndokwa Youth Ambassador, Miss Maureen Achugbe on dangers of Breast Cancer and Female Genital Mutilation, FGM.
Dr. Ojie who was a Guest Speaker of the one day event, said cancer results from the growth of body out of control, which affects both male and female.
He said that the breast cancer is abnormal breast swellings which can affect both sex, with the women folk suffering up to 80 per cent of it.
The Dr. called for regular body check-up, to check, and arrest abnormal growth such as breast cancer, by consulting with the Doctors, saying the sickness can be treated if it can be diagnose early enough.
He advised women especially, to always check their breasts, and visit the Doctor once they notice any abnormal growth on their breast.
Similarly, he had advocated for the abolition of the cultural practice of female circumcision or Female Genital Mutilation as it has no health value, as he said that several women has lost their lives through the practice, as a result of excessive bleeding, urine infection and menstrual irritation, which are some of the problems associated with the practice.
“We have to end this practice because there is no medical value. It comes with excessive bleeding, urine infection and menstrual irritation”. He said.
Dr Ojie said that continuing the practice will also cause a lot of pain to the society, as many of the resources for other development will be diverted to take care of the victims of the practice.
