ASABA/Nigeria: The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Delta state Chapter, has concluded its 2018 NAWOJ week with a call on Deltans to join hands with relevant authorities in building a virile society.
The state Chairman of the Association, Comrade Patricia Gbemudu made the call at the grand finale of the event held in Asaba.
The celebration featured donation to an orphanage and a workshop.
Addressing the gathering, Comrade Gbemudu condemned the high level of insecurity and ritual killings of females in the state, and enjoined the authorities, professional bodies and members of the public to curb the menace.
She enumerated the achievements of the present executive, especially in awareness creation and advocacy visits to community leaders, government agencies, markets and schools, adding that the NAWOJ Frith club, established in public secondary schools in the state, had become the platform for the Association to continually reach out to children of secondary school age.
The state NAWOJ chairman thanked media organizations, civil society groups, individuals and government agencies who partnered with the Association, as well as the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ for their support, stressing that collaboration remained the key to actualising greater feats.
She said the Association marked its 2018 NAWOJ week with donation of food items to an orphanage, in the spirit of the Christmas season, and a workshop to economically empower its female members, in line with the Association’s vision of touching the lives of women and children.
The Vice Chairman of the state NUJ, Comrade Patrick Ochei and the Union’s state Secretary, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, commended Delta NAWOJ for advocating good welfare for the vulnerable in the society, and urged them to keep up the good work.
Earlier, the members of the Delta NAWOJ visited the mother of Divine Grace Orphanage one and two, to donate food items to the home.
The items included bag of rice, tubers of yam, bunches of plantain, gallon of groundnut oil, cartons of tin tomatoes and noodles, as well as fruits.
Presenting the items comrade Gbemudu commended the efforts of the caregivers in ensuring the welfare of the children, and urged them not to relent.
The 2018 Delta NAWOJ week celebration had as theme, “Media Entrepreneurship Opportunities for Female Reporters; a Career Plan”.
The event featured praise and worship session, educative games for female reporters, rendering of the women theme song, seminar and workshop handled by lady Ejiro Umukoro, interactive session to clarify grey areas, as well as practical on how to tie headgear, taught by a beautician in the state, Mrs Evelyn Emeyazia.
