ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has directed an immediate assessment of public primary and secondary schools across the state’s 25 local government areas as it prepares to commence a major rehabilitation and reconstruction programme in the coming weeks.
The directive was one of the decisions reached at Monday’s meeting of the Delta State Executive Council, presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, disclosed the decision while briefing journalists after the meeting in Asaba.
According to him, the Ministries of Primary Education and Secondary Education are to undertake the assessment and determine the schools requiring rehabilitation, renovation or complete reconstruction.
Aniagwu said the assessment would provide the government with the scope of work required in each affected school and enable it to move ahead with the intervention.
He said the initiative was intended to improve the physical conditions of schools and provide pupils, students and teachers with safer and more conducive environments for teaching and learning.
The commissioner said the school intervention was part of the state government’s broader infrastructure development programme, which focuses on improving public facilities across the state.
He quoted Governor Oborevwori as directing the two ministries to immediately identify schools requiring attention so that the government could commence the necessary rehabilitation and reconstruction works.
The government has not yet released a comprehensive list of the schools to be covered, nor the total cost of the programme. Those details are expected to emerge after the assessment and preparation of the scope of work by the relevant ministries.
The planned intervention will cover schools across Delta’s 25 local government areas, making it one of the administration’s broader education infrastructure initiatives.
The state government’s decision comes against the background of continuing investment in public infrastructure, with education facilities forming part of the administration’s stated effort to improve conditions in government-owned institutions.
