Delta Peace Council Condemn Okuama Incident

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Advisory and Peace Building Council (DSA&PBC) has issued a strong condemnation following the killing of Nigerian Army officers and soldiers in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of the State. The council, presided over by Chairman Professor Sam Oyovbaire, expressed condolences to the Nigerian Army, the Presidency, the families of the deceased officers and soldiers, and the Delta State Government for the tragic loss of lives.

In a meeting held on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, the council commended Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for his prompt responses to the situation. The DSA&PBC, known for its advocacy and commitment to peace building and conflict resolution, reaffirmed its dedication to restoring peace in Okuama and other affected communities.

In a resolution signed by Prof. Sam Oyovbaire, the council stated, “The perpetrators of the criminally bestial killing of the Army officers and soldiers must be apprehended and duly prosecuted. There must be no hiding places for these criminals.” It called for unrestricted access to the affected communities to facilitate independent observations, investigations, and the provision of humanitarian assistance.

The council empathized with the people of Okuama and other affected communities in Delta and Bayelsa states, acknowledging their suffering and losses. It urged relevant authorities to ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the heinous crime.

The DSA&PBC reiterated its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region and called for the dismantling of sieges in affected communities to allow for the safe return of residents and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
