Delta Police Begin Crackdown on Uninsured Vehicles, Enforce Third-Party Insurance Compliance

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Police Command has commenced strict enforcement of the Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance policy, in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and in accordance with the Insurance Act and the Motor Vehicle (Third-Party Insurance) Act. The enforcement operation, which began on February 1, 2025, aims to ensure full compliance among vehicle owners in the state.

Third-party motor insurance is a mandatory requirement for all vehicle owners, providing financial protection against liabilities in the event of accidents. The Delta State Police Command, citing reports from the Nigerian Insurance Association, expressed concern over the rising number of uninsured vehicles on the roads, posing risks to responsible motorists and accident victims.

Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, emphasized that the enforcement is intended to uphold fairness and protect law-abiding drivers. He described driving without valid insurance as both illegal and reckless, warning that violators face severe legal consequences, including vehicle seizure and possible prosecution.

Motorists in Delta State are therefore advised to ensure their vehicle insurance is up to date and to carry proof of valid Third-Party Insurance at all times to avoid penalties. The police command reaffirmed its commitment to road safety and ensuring accident victims receive adequate compensation under the law.
