ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement exercise targeting vehicle and traffic violations, with 10 vehicles taken before a mobile court in Asaba for alleged traffic offences.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, announcing the commencement of Operation VELVET across the state.
The operation, launched in compliance with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is aimed at improving compliance with traffic regulations, promoting road safety and strengthening security on roads across Delta State.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel Etaifo Erale, led the flag-off ceremony in Asaba, while the exercise commenced simultaneously across the command’s nine Area Commands and police divisions.
According to the statement, the enforcement targets vehicles without valid documentation, unregistered vehicles and those without number plates. It also covers vehicles displaying defaced, obscured, altered or deliberately concealed registration plates.
The command said 10 vehicles found to have contravened traffic regulations in Asaba had been taken to the mobile court and were undergoing judicial proceedings.
Addressing journalists during the flag-off, Erale urged motorists and vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles were properly documented and that approved registration plates were clearly displayed.
He also directed officers deployed for the exercise to maintain firmness, civility and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
The Commissioner warned that extortion, harassment and other forms of misconduct would not be tolerated, stressing the need for lawful enforcement and respect for the rights and dignity of members of the public.
The command appealed to motorists to cooperate with personnel carrying out the operation and reaffirmed its commitment to improving vehicle identification, preventing the use of improperly identified vehicles by criminal elements and enhancing road safety across the state.
