ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Police Command on Tuesday intensified activities marking the 2026 National Police Week with a walkathon in Asaba aimed at promoting peace, enhancing visibility, and strengthening public confidence in policing.
The exercise was confirmed in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, who said the initiative forms part of efforts to deepen community engagement and reassure residents of the Command’s commitment to safety.
The walkathon commenced from the Police Headquarters along Okpanam Road and proceeded to the Stephen Keshi Stadium, covering approximately 3.2 kilometres back and forth, with officers and men of the Command actively participating.
Similar exercises, according to the Command, were simultaneously held across the nine Area Commands in the state, underscoring a coordinated approach to community-oriented policing.
The event was designed to reinforce the visibility of police personnel within communities and assure residents of their accessibility and responsiveness to security concerns, while also demonstrating the physical fitness and readiness of officers.
Speaking during the exercise, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, said the walkathon aligns with the theme of the 2026 National Police Week, “Community Partnership: Building Trust.”
He noted that the initiative reflects the Command’s commitment to fostering stronger relationships with the public and promoting collaborative efforts in maintaining peace and security across the state.
“The Police are within reach of the people at all times. We encourage residents to support and partner with us in the collective effort to sustain peace and security,” Oyeniyi said.
He further urged members of the public to freely report concerns and complaints, assuring that the Command remains willing, capable and ready to address issues professionally and promptly.
The walkathon formed part of a series of activities lined up to commemorate the 2026 National Police Week, aimed at strengthening police-community relations and enhancing public safety across Delta State.
