ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Education reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the performance of government institutions in the education sector to align with the state government’s objectives. Led by Chairman Chukwuemeke Charles Emetulu, the committee conducted oversight visits to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) under the education sector.
During the visits to the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board, the Delta State Library Board, and the Ministry of Higher Education in Asaba, Hon. Emetulu emphasized the legislative mandate to oversee the implementation of financial appropriations to MDAs. He commended the scholarship board for maintaining existing schemes and urged officials to strive for timely approvals to meet students’ welfare needs.
Expressing concerns over the state of libraries in the state, particularly the dilapidated conditions, Emetulu advocated for a collaborative effort between the library board and the State Commissioner for Higher Education to revamp the library system. He suggested transitioning to a digital library system to preserve the reading culture.
At the Ministry of Higher Education, Emetulu commended the commissioner and his team for their efforts to enhance standards in tertiary education. He encouraged further measures to promote academic excellence and infrastructural development in institutions.
In response, Commissioner for Higher Education Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, Executive Secretary of the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board Comrade Shedrack Agediga, and Dr. Godfrey Enitan, Chairman of the Delta State Library Board, highlighted various challenges faced by their institutions and appealed for continued support from lawmakers.
The committee’s visits to other institutions are ongoing as they seek to ensure optimal performance and excellence in Delta State’s education sector.
