Delta State Assembly Urges Governor to Act Swiftly Against Herdsmen Attacks

ASABA/Nigeria: In response to the escalating security concerns in various communities, particularly in Uwheru and its environs within the Ughelli North local government area, the Delta State House of Assembly convened on Tuesday to address the pressing issue of incessant attacks by herdsmen. The Assembly, in a unanimous resolution, called upon Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to take urgent action to quell these attacks.

The motion, brought forward under matters of urgent public importance by Hon. Spencer Owhofa, the representative of Ughelli North 2 State Constituency, highlighted the recent brutal attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Uwheru community. During this attack, a farmer lost his life, and several others sustained injuries. This incident, which occurred on Monday, February 5, 2024, during the annual fishing festival at Emuede lake, prompted grave concerns among the Assembly members.

Expressing deep worry over the rising insecurity in the state, Hon. Owhofa emphasized the necessity for immediate intervention to prevent further loss of lives and property. He underscored the importance of directing relevant security agencies to intensify efforts in tackling the menace.

The resolution, supported by Hon. Matthew Omonade and endorsed after rigorous deliberations, urged Governor Oborevwori to compel the State Commissioner of Police and other relevant government agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the incident. Furthermore, the Assembly stressed the importance of apprehending and bringing to justice the perpetrators responsible for the attacks.

Hon. Owhofa, backed by his colleagues, advocated for enhanced security measures through regular 24-hour patrols by a joint operation comprising the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Local Vigilante, and Community Security Corps. He warned that failure to address the situation promptly could lead to unprecedented breakdowns of law and order.

Citing constitutional provisions that mandate the protection of lives and property, the lawmakers emphasized the imperative need for restoring peace and order in the affected communities. They also expressed disappointment with the federal government’s apparent inaction on the nationwide security challenges, calling upon President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene.

Speaker Rt. Hon Emomotimi Guwor extended condolences to the people of Uwherun over the tragic incident and instructed the Acting Clerk of the House to convey the Assembly’s resolution to Governor Oborevwori for immediate action.

With the House adjourned until Wednesday, February 7, 2024, the urgency of addressing the security crisis remains at the forefront of Delta State’s agenda.
