Delta State Bans Okada and Scrap Metal Scavenging in Asaba

By Emmanuel Enebeli

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has announced an immediate ban on commercial motorcycle operations, known as “Okada,” and scrap metal scavenging, referred to as “iron condemn,” within the Asaba Capital Territory and other major cities.

The decision, prompted by rising incidents of vandalism and crime targeting public facilities, was revealed today by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, at the Government House in Asaba.

Dr. Emu stated that while the ban takes effect immediately, enforcement will begin on June 1, 2024. “No ‘iron condemn’ cart pusher should operate in any part of the State Capital Territory after May 31, 2024,” he declared, highlighting the state’s determination to protect public property.

Alongside the ban on scavenging, the government has expanded the prohibition of Okada operations to additional areas within the Capital Territory.

Dr. Emu assured that a comprehensive public awareness campaign would precede enforcement to ensure compliance. He emphasized that these measures aim to enhance peace and security and are not intended to target any specific ethnic group.

Information Commissioner Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, Works Commissioner for Highways and Urban Roads Comrade Reuben Izeze, Works Commissioner for Rural and Riverine Roads Mr. Charles Aniagwu, and Higher Education Commissioner Prof. Tonakare were also present at the briefing and provided further details on the implementation of these measures.
