Delta State Bureau of Orientation to Launch Extensive Tax Awareness Campaign

ASABA/Nigeria: Dr. Wilfred Latimore Oghenesivbe, Head of the Delta State Bureau of Orientation, has revealed plans for a comprehensive outreach strategy aimed at educating citizens on the legal repercussions of tax evasion/avoidance. The initiative also seeks to stress the importance of timely tax payments, especially for individuals and informal sector operators.

Speaking on a live public affairs radio program aired by Voice of Delta Radio and Morning Ride Show on State Television Asaba, Dr. Oghenesivbe highlighted the collaboration between the Bureau and the State Internal Revenue Services. Their joint efforts are aligned with the government’s objective to generate a monthly revenue of over N12 billion next year.

He emphasized the gravity of tax evasion and avoidance as severe criminal offenses that demand discouragement. He underscored that paying taxes stands as a fundamental civic duty, pivotal in generating supplementary financial resources. These resources, in turn, facilitate the government in providing essential services like social welfare programs, infrastructure development, ensuring state security, and fulfilling its social contract with citizens.

The Bureau’s multifaceted campaign will employ various mediums including radio and television jingles, social media podcasts, billboards, and community-based town hall meetings. Dr. Oghenesivbe reiterated the campaign’s core objective to dissuade youth from engaging in social vices and financial crimes like Advance Fee Fraud, prostitution, homosexuality, and lesbianism, all classified as criminal acts in federal and state laws.

Furthermore, the Bureau aims to redefine the perception and behaviour of street youths, redirecting them towards embracing the government’s Human Capital Development and Skills Acquisition Programs. These initiatives, integral to Governor Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori’s MORE agenda, aim to equip and mentor them into responsible citizens and successful entrepreneurs.

Dr. Oghenesivbe outlined the Bureau’s commitment to uplifting rural communities by communicating government policies and achievements in their local languages. He stressed the urgent need to counter the erosion of moral values due to social vices, signaling the government’s responsibility to address this through impactful sensitization programs spearheaded by the Bureau.

In times of natural disasters or crises, the Bureau aims to proactively educate and inform citizens to prevent or minimize adverse effects. Dr. Oghenesivbe expressed readiness to collaborate with governmental agencies and organizations to drive the MORE agenda. He reiterated the importance of citizens fulfilling their civic duties, particularly in tax compliance.

The MORE agenda, as described by Dr. Oghenesivbe, encompasses comprehensive programs targeting various societal segments, including initiatives for job creation and healthcare. The ultimate goal remains the transformation of street youths into esteemed members of society and thriving entrepreneurs.
