WARRI/Nigeria: In a significant development during her second quarter visit to prisons, Delta State Chief Judge, Justice Tessy Diai, oversaw the release of several inmates, including Mr. Jeremiah Okotiebor and Odotimade Lylon from Ozobo Town in Ijaw land, as well as Umaru Abubakar and Mr. Peter Okru.
Speaking during the visit, Justice Diai emphasized that a thorough review of 360 warrants had taken place, clarifying that no inmates were granted bail. She underscored the importance of Court Registrars adhering to the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, particularly in promptly forwarding casefiles of remand suspects to the Attorney-General’s office within the stipulated three days.
Commending the collaborative efforts of key stakeholders including the Solicitor-General, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Justice, Mr. Omamuzo Erebe, Director of Public Prosecutions Mr. Anthony Orhorhoro, magistrates, correctional officers, and others, Justice Diai highlighted their pivotal contributions to the successful execution of the visit.
Earlier, Deputy Comptroller of the Warri Custodial Centre, Mr. Edo Lucky, briefed the Chief Judge on recent improvements within the correctional facility. He noted the introduction of educational opportunities allowing inmates to obtain primary and secondary school certificates during their incarceration.
The visit by Justice Diai not only facilitated the release of deserving individuals but also underscored the judiciary’s commitment to fair and efficient justice administration across Delta State.
