Delta State Commissioner Praises Journalists and Calls for Greater Support for ‘The Pointer’ Newspaper

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr Charles Aniagwu, has extended his profound gratitude to journalists in both Delta State and Nigeria at large, acknowledging their unwavering support since he entered public service in 2015.

Speaking at The Pointer Newspaper’s 30th-anniversary event at Grand Hotel and Resorts, Asaba, where he received the Public Service Excellence Award, Aniagwu dedicated his award to the journalists who have consistently supported his efforts.

As a former Commissioner for Information, Aniagwu expressed appreciation to Delta’s past and present leadership, especially former Governor Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa and the incumbent, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for entrusting him with roles of significance. “I deeply appreciate these leaders. It’s a privilege to serve, and I’m humbled to be chosen among the many qualified Deltans,” he stated.

Reflecting on the award, Aniagwu expressed how meaningful it was to be recognised by colleagues in the journalism profession. “To be acknowledged by journalists—those who critically evaluate the actions of public figures—is an immense honour. This recognition reminds me of the responsibility we hold and the importance of fulfilling it to the best of our abilities,” Aniagwu remarked.

In his tenure as Chief Press Secretary and Commissioner for Information, Aniagwu noted the immense support he had received from his media colleagues, both within government circles and across media outlets. “Since joining the state government, I have enjoyed steadfast support from colleagues and the broader media community. This recognition is something I deeply cherish and do not take for granted,” he said.

Turning to The Pointer Newspaper’s legacy, Aniagwu praised the publication for its resilience amidst various challenges. He highlighted the pressing need for the newspaper to gain its own printing press to reduce reliance on third-party services, which would enable greater autonomy and control over its operations. “With their own printing press, The Pointer could increase print runs, manage speed, and ensure a more efficient distribution network,” Aniagwu explained.

He further advocated for the state government’s support to establish these facilities, which he believes would empower The Pointer to eventually generate independent revenue and remit funds back to the state. “Given their current constraints, the dedication of the staff is commendable. They truly go above and beyond to deliver daily publications,” he added.

In his remarks, Aniagwu underscored the role of journalism as essential to public accountability and expressed his commitment to supporting the press as a vital pillar of democratic governance in Delta State.
