Delta State Confirms Readiness for National Youth Games in Asaba

ASABA/Nigeria: Ahead of the 8th National Youth Games set to commence on September 12, the Delta State Government has assured the public of its full readiness to host a seamless and successful event in the state capital, Asaba.

This assurance came from the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, following an inspection of key facilities prepared for the games. He confirmed that the state has put in place satisfactory arrangements for competition venues, accommodation, transportation, and security to ensure the safety of all participants.

The facilities inspected include the main bowl, three indoor sports halls, the swimming pool, and the VVIP and VIP lounges at the Stephen Keshi International Stadium. Dr. Emu also toured the newly upgraded Cenotaph, which has been equipped with volleyball and handball courts, as well as the ultra-modern hockey pitch and adjacent sports hostel. Additionally, the hostel facilities at Dennis Osadebey University, which will accommodate about 70 percent of the athletes, were reviewed.

At Dennis Osadebey University, Dr. Emu inspected the hostels’ beddings, toilets, electricity, water supply systems, and tasted the food provided for the athletes. Following his observations, he expressed confidence in the state’s preparedness.

“Delta is always ready. First of all, we have the facilities, and the maintenance is top-notch. We have toured most of the venues, and I can boldly say we are ready. We could even start the competition today,” he declared.

Dr. Emu further stated that his visit was at the directive of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to ensure all preparations were on track. He added, “Although a few areas need final touches, these can be sorted out within 24 hours before the games begin.”

On security, Dr. Emu emphasized that while Delta State remains relatively secure, extra precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of all participants. “Delta doesn’t rank high in insecurity, but we understand the widespread issues across the country. The police are actively involved in the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), and we’ve had discussions with the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations. They are fully prepared to handle any challenges.”

He also noted the state’s use of modern security technology. “We are technologically ready. Everywhere is wired, and by the grace of God, we expect no major incidents,” he said.

Dr. Emu assured athletes, officials, and spectators that they would enjoy their time in Asaba, a city that has developed a reputation for hospitality. He pointed out that the city has hosted numerous international events, and that the Youth Games, while significant, is smaller than some of the larger events previously held.

“The children will have fun. The facilities are impressive, and we’ve gone the extra mile to ensure their comfort and safety. Over 70 percent of them are housed at the secure Dennis Osadebey University. Spectators can also enjoy the city’s leisure spots, including the Maryam Babangida Leisure Park, and sample the famous Delta cuisine,” he added.

Dr. Emu was accompanied on the inspection by key members of the LOC, including its Chairman, Chief Solomon Ogba; Director General of the Delta State Sports Commission, Festus Owhojero; Chairman of the Facilities Sub-Committee, Victor Onogagamue; and Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee, Harrison Ocholor.
