Delta State Government Approves N674 Million Bursary Payment for Students

ASABA/Nigeria: In a significant move aimed at supporting education and alleviating financial burdens on families, the Delta State Executive Council (EXCO) has sanctioned the disbursement of over N674,000,000 as bursary to students hailing from the state for the 2022/2023 academic session. The decision, part of a series of resolutions made at the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, underscores the government’s commitment to educational welfare and infrastructure development.

Addressing the media following the session, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, the State Commissioner for Information, highlighted additional approvals granted during the meeting. Notably, EXCO greenlit the procurement of medical equipment for 20 general hospitals spread across the state. The designated hospitals include prominent healthcare facilities such as those in Obiaruku, Abraka, and Ekpan, among others.

Osuoza, joined by key officials including Mr. Charles Aniagwu, Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Prof. Nyerovwo Tonukari, Commissioner for Higher Education, and Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, Commissioner for Health, emphasized the government’s multifaceted approach to addressing public needs. He disclosed that EXCO also endorsed compensation for properties affected by the construction of a flyover at Enerhen Junction to First Marine Gate, demonstrating a commitment to infrastructural development alongside educational support.

Mr. Aniagwu elucidated on the rationale behind the bursary initiative, stressing the government’s recognition of prevailing economic hardships faced by families. He underscored the interconnectedness of education and socioeconomic wellbeing, affirming that the bursary disbursement aims to alleviate financial strains on students and their families.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Onojaeme, disclosed that over N3 billion was allocated for the procurement of medical equipment for the designated general hospitals. He further assured the public of the government’s resolve to combat healthcare challenges and maintain essential medical services.

Prof. Tonukari provided insights into the bursary disbursement, revealing that over 30,000 students from Delta State studying across 195 institutions nationwide will benefit from the allocation. He underscored the government’s commitment to ongoing and future educational support initiatives, highlighting preparations for the subsequent academic sessions.

Additionally, Mr. Aniagwu addressed concerns regarding gully erosion, affirming the government’s proactive stance in mitigating environmental hazards. He reassured citizens of ongoing efforts to address infrastructural challenges across the state, emphasizing the administration’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all Deltans.
