ASABA/Nigeria: In a bid to ensure every pregnancy is safe, every childbirth is attended to by skilled professionals, and every child has the opportunity to thrive and fulfill their potential, the Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare.

During the first quarter meeting of the State Steering Committee on Maternal, Perinatal and Child Death Surveillance and Response held in Asaba, the wife of the Delta State Governor, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, emphasized the government’s dedication to this cause.

Represented by Mrs. Emmy Nwaobi, the wife of the Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, Deaconess Tobore called on all stakeholders to recommit themselves to saving lives and building a brighter future for mothers, newborns, and children in the state.

“I am committed to leveraging my role as the Wife of the Governor to advocate for increased investment in maternal and child health, improved access to quality healthcare services, and enhanced support for vulnerable populations, including adolescent girls, pregnant women, and newborns,” the First Lady disclosed.

Addressing the gathering, the Delta State Commissioner for Health, who also chairs the State Steering Committee, highlighted the high rate of deaths from complications arising from pregnancy or childbirth in the state. He emphasized the committee’s role in addressing this issue.

“Our gathering today is not merely a routine meeting but a dedicated forum where our commitment to enhancing maternal health in Delta State takes center stage. The collaborative efforts of this esteemed committee will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of maternal health outcomes,” the Commissioner stated.

Dr. Roy Maduka, First Co-Chairman of the State Steering Committee and a Consultant Obstetrician, emphasized the objective of the meeting: to ensure that no mother, child, newborn, or even child in the womb dies needlessly. He stressed the importance of providing quality care at health facilities without delays.

The Delta State Government’s renewed commitment underscores the importance of prioritizing maternal and child health, with a focus on reducing preventable deaths and ensuring the well-being of women and children across the state.
