Delta State Government Committed to Elevating Education Standards – Onyeme

ASABA/Nigeria: The Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, has reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to improving education in the state under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

He made this statement while receiving the leadership of the Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA) during a courtesy call in Asaba.

Sir Onyeme highlighted the government’s focus on upgrading facilities in public institutions and ensuring the recruitment of qualified personnel in the education sector, in line with the administration’s MORE Agenda.

He praised the GCUOBA for their proposal to take over the management of Government College, Ughelli, but emphasized the need to follow due process before such an arrangement could be formalized.

“From the success stories you shared about other schools managed by their alumni associations, I am confident you will manage the college effectively. However, all proper procedures must be adhered to, which you have already begun,” Onyeme said.

“I will inform the Governor of your intentions, as they align with our administration’s commitment to raising the standard of education in the state.”

The Deputy Governor acknowledged that the government cannot single-handedly address all educational challenges and lauded the association’s readiness to partner with the state. He noted that Government College, Ughelli has produced many distinguished individuals and emphasized that inclusivity in governance allows for collaboration with organizations willing to contribute to societal growth.

Earlier, the President-General of GCUOBA, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje, SAN, requested that the Delta State Government consider handing over the management of the school to the association.

He emphasized the college’s prestigious history, stating, “Government College, Ughelli, founded in 1945, has a legacy of producing men of integrity, excellence, and discipline.”

A consultant from Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC), Mary Iwelumo, outlined the areas proposed for concession, which include leadership, management, teaching, student welfare, co-curricular activities, and financial operations. She explained that these reforms would benefit the school, the state, and the nation.

Notable members of GCUOBA present at the visit included Architect Charles Majoroh, Mr. Sam Amuka Pemu, Chief Miller Uloho, Mr. Patrick Origho, and Elder Simeon Efenudu.
