ASABA/Nigeria: As an expression of appreciation of the sacrifices fallen heroes and heroines paid for the unity and defense of the Country, the Delta State Government has pledged its commitment to the welfares of the families of retired and serving security personnel in the State.
The State Deputy Governor, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro, pledged the commitment on Monday, 8th January, 2018, at the Emblem Launch of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration in Asaba.
Barr. Otuaro stated that the State Government would continue to support the activities of Nigerian Legion.
“Our administration would continue to support activities of Nigerian Legion, especially in those viable projects meant for the benefit of the dependents of fallen heroes and heroines
“Nigeria being a prominent member of the global body has found herself involved in many peacekeeping missions within and beyond the borders of Africa.
“It is on record that many of our soldiers lost their lives in this exercise, worst was the recent terrorists activities in the North Eastern part of the Country leaving a lot of responsibilities for their unprepared families.
“I appeal to those who have assisted in the past not to relent. And to humanitarian spirits of our industrialists, commercial firms, organisations, philanthropists and all individuals to donate generously to the Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem Appeal Week Fund.
The Deputy Governor said that the proceeds from the sales of emblems would be used to support the people living with disabilities, less privileged ex-servicemen and women.
“Nothing is too little for the families of our fallen heroes and heroines, “he said.
Barr Otuaro commended the efforts of Nigerian Legion, Delta State Chapter for imitating various relief packages designed to make legionnaires and their dependents self-sustaining to reduce poverty.
Earlier, State Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Rtd. Col. Boniface Ojei, said Delta State is kick starting the emblem launch of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration in honour of our fallen heroes.
Col. Ojei said that any amount given to the veterans and fallen heroes should be seen as a wise spending in the right direction, adding that it was to complement their effort.
He further commended the State Government for their past and untiring supports to the Nigerian Legion, Delta State Command.
Col. Ojei used the avenue to appealed to the Delta State Government for vehicle support for the State Legion Command
The event was attended by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oboreworhi and members of the State House of Assembly, members of the State Executive Council, representative of the Asagba of Asaba and the Traditional Rulers Council, Service Chiefs in the State and hosts of invited guests.
Other highlights of the event were generous cash donations from the State Government, Speaker of the DTHA, Commissioners, Service Chiefs and other dignitaries that were present.
