Delta State Government Enforces Law on Mandatory Installation of Surveillance Cameras in Public Places

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has announced the enforcement of a law mandating the installation of smart surveillance cameras in public places to enhance crime control efforts.

Originally enacted in July 2020, the law requires owners of public establishments such as shopping malls, eateries, cinemas, and schools to install specified surveillance cameras to improve security. The cameras must meet certain technical specifications, including 4K resolution, night vision, and weather-proof capabilities for both indoor and outdoor use.

A statement from the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, emphasized that the enforcement is part of the government’s broader effort to ensure public safety. Dr. Emu further noted that failure to comply with the law would result in severe penalties, including a two-year prison sentence, a fine of N500,000, and the sealing of non-compliant premises until they meet the requirements.

The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of residents but called for collective cooperation with security agencies to maintain safety and ensure that businesses remain operational.

This initiative aims to deter criminal activities, improve safety in public areas, and provide critical evidence in crime investigations, strengthening overall security across the state.
