ASABA/Nigeria: The Executive Assistant to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on New Media, Mr. Felix Ofou, has addressed the pressing concerns of commuters regarding the deteriorating state of the Agbor-Abraka-Eku Road. Mr. Ofou provided insight into the challenges faced by the Delta State Government in addressing this issue.
The Agbor-Abraka-Eku Road has long been a source of frustration for commuters in the region, and Mr. Ofou wasted no time in highlighting the government’s determination to reverse this situation. He emphasized that not only has the Federal Government seemingly abandoned the road, but it has also consistently denied the Delta State Government the opportunity to intervene.
Mr. Ofou expressed hope that Governor Oborevwori’s engagement with the new administration of President Bola Tinubu and the apparent willingness of the new Minister of Works, David Umahi, will lead to a resolution in the near future. He stated, “The impression is being created that His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, has abandoned the Agbor-Abraka-Eku Road, but we want to put it in its true perspective.”
He further clarified that the Agbor-Abraka-Eku Road, along with other federal roads in Delta, is under the control of the Federal Government, making it their responsibility to maintain these vital infrastructure links. Mr. Ofou pointed out that several federal roads in the state, such as parts of the East-West Road, the Warri-Sapele-Benin Road, and the Illah-Ebu Road, have all been neglected.
The government’s stance, as explained by the Executive Assistant, is that there seems to be an unspoken policy of neglecting federal roads in states controlled by the opposition party, particularly in the South-South region. He referred to previous attempts by the Delta State Government to work on these roads, only to be told by the then Minister of Works that the state should stay away from federal road projects.
Although there is a new Minister of Works, Mr. Ofou noted that there hasn’t been any visible progress or contractor activity on these roads. Despite the state government’s efforts to provide temporary relief to the affected communities, they are limited by the Federal Government’s control over these roads.
Mr. Ofou acknowledged the suffering of the people who rely on these roads daily and assured them that Governor Oborevwori is actively engaging with the federal government to address this issue. He emphasized that leaving the status quo intact would lead to more suffering for the people, which is not in line with a caring government’s objectives.
He urged citizens to direct their complaints to the appropriate authorities while emphasizing that the situation on federal roads in Delta State, including the Agbor-Abraka-Eku Road, is a matter of great concern and requires immediate attention.
Furthermore, Mr. Ofou highlighted Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to infrastructure development across the state, emphasizing that no project has been abandoned, and new initiatives are actively being pursued to enhance the lives of all Deltans.
He also mentioned that once the stalemate is resolved, the state government has the capacity to work on the Agbor-Abraka-Eku Road and other neglected federal roads in the state. Until then, he called for patience and understanding from the citizens as they work diligently to find a solution to these pressing issues.
